Kybella is an injectable formulation of deoxycholic acid used to reduce fat beneath the chin in appropriately selected patients. It is placed into the submental fat during an in-office treatment.

Kybella is used for submental fullness caused by fat beneath the chin. Fullness can also relate to skin laxity, muscle position, glandular tissue or jaw structure, and those are not treated with Kybella.

Candidacy depends on the amount and distribution of submental fat, skin quality, anatomy, medical history and treatment goals. Final candidacy is determined after assessment.

Treatment is generally deferred during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with active infection or inflammation in the treatment area, with certain medical conditions, or with previous surgery in the area. If submental fullness is not primarily fat, another approach may be more appropriate.

Appointment length varies. Time is set aside for assessment, consent, treatment and aftercare instructions. Your expected appointment length is confirmed when you book.

Swelling is expected and can be significant. Temporary tenderness, bruising, firmness, numbness or redness may occur. It is worth planning your schedule with this in mind.

Change develops gradually as swelling settles and the treated area responds over the weeks following each session. Results are not immediate.

Once an appropriate response is achieved, further treatment is often not needed. Individual results vary and future weight change can affect the appearance of the area. Outcomes cannot be guaranteed.

Multiple treatment sessions are commonly required. The number is individualized and reviewed as your response is assessed.

Common temporary effects include swelling, bruising, tenderness, numbness, firmness and redness.
